Creating Handmade Holiday Decorations

There’s something special about decorating your home with projects you’ve made yourself. This year’s holiday class schedule includes several opportunities to create seasonal pieces while learning techniques you can use for future projects.

Gingerbread Village Cabin — November 11

Add a little handmade charm to your holiday decorations with the Gingerbread Village Cabin class. This festive project is a fun way to explore decorative sewing and create something you can display throughout the holiday season.

Advent Calendar Panel — November 16

Advent calendars are a favorite holiday tradition, especially for families with children or grandchildren. In this workshop, participants will work with an Advent calendar panel to create a seasonal decoration that can become part of their family’s Christmas traditions for years to come.

Rope Wreath — December 7

Holiday wreaths don’t always have to come from a store. The Rope Wreath workshop offers a creative way to make seasonal decor. It’s an opportunity to try something different while creating a piece to display or give as a gift.

These classes are a great fit for anyone who enjoys holiday decorating and wants to add a personal touch to their home.

Sew Something Special for Holiday Gift Giving

Handmade gifts are a wonderful way to show someone you care. They can also be practical, personal, and enjoyable to make. Several upcoming Richland Sewing Center classes focus on projects that could make thoughtful presents for friends and family.

Chenille Hot Pad Embroidery — November 6

Explore the texture and decorative possibilities of chenille embroidery while creating a useful kitchen accessory. A handmade hot pad can make a thoughtful gift, especially when paired with other kitchen items or seasonal treats.

Embroidered Christmas Mug Rug — November 21

A mug rug is a small quilted or embroidered mat designed to hold a cup and a snack. This holiday-themed workshop offers a manageable project that makes a great gift for coffee and tea lovers.

Embroidered Book Pillow — December 19

For the readers in your life, an embroidered book pillow offers a creative gift idea. This project combines sewing and embroidery to make something personal and useful, especially for children, grandchildren, or any avid reader.

With a little planning, these classes can help you create meaningful gifts while picking up techniques you can use year-round.

Sharpen Your Sewing Techniques Ahead of the New Year

Not every holiday project needs to feature Christmas fabrics or seasonal designs. November and December are also great times to improve your sewing skills, explore new equipment, or tackle a technique you’ve been meaning to learn.

Holiday Paper Piecing Workshop — November 12

Paper piecing is a quilting technique that helps sewists create precise shapes and detailed designs. This holiday workshop allows participants to practice the technique while working on a seasonal project.

Embroidery 101 — November 14

If you’re new to machine embroidery, Embroidery 101 is a great place to begin. This hands-on class covers essential techniques such as hooping, stabilizers, and design placement.

Whether you’ve recently purchased an embroidery machine or want to feel more confident using one, this class can help you build a foundation for future projects.

Brother Yarn Couching — December 11

Yarn couching adds texture and dimension to fabric by securing yarn in decorative patterns. This workshop gives Brother machine owners a chance to explore a creative technique and discover more ways to personalize their sewing projects.

Learning something new now can also give you a head start on the projects you want to tackle in 2027.

Celebrate the Season with the Richland Sewing Community

One of the best parts of sewing is sharing your creativity with people who enjoy it just as much as you do. Richland Sewing Center offers more than individual workshops. Our clubs and group sewing sessions give North Texas sewists opportunities to exchange ideas, work on projects, and enjoy time together.

DEC Club — November 13–14 and December 4–5

Our Decorative Machine Club brings sewists together for demonstrations, new techniques, show-and-tell, and creative inspiration. Members share their projects, learn from one another, and enjoy a welcoming environment.

Whether you’re looking for inspiration for your next holiday project or want to connect with other sewists, DEC Club is a wonderful way to stay involved.

Quilt Club — November 19–20 and December 17–18

Quilt Club offers a place for quilting enthusiasts to share their work, participate in challenges, exchange blocks, and learn new techniques. It’s also a great opportunity to discover ideas for your next quilt or handmade gift.

With gatherings scheduled in both November and December, there’s still time to connect with the quilting community before the year ends.

All Day Sew-In — November 27–28

Need some dedicated time to work on your holiday projects? Our November All Day Sew-In allows participants to bring their projects into the classroom and enjoy a productive sewing session alongside fellow sewists.

Whether you’re finishing a quilt, working on gifts, or catching up on unfinished projects, setting aside time to sew can help you make progress before the December rush.

As sewing-machine technology improved, the machine gradually moved beyond factories and commercial workshops and into people’s homes.
